New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
